James McBride Shackelford papers, 1819-1887.

Papers consist of family and business correspondence, financial records, and other items. Family correspondence (1819-1887) concerns personal and family affairs, James M. Shackelford's remarriage (1874), a portrait, and other matters. Correspondents include Eliza A. Shackelford, poet Anna P. (Shackelford) Dinnies of New Orleans (La.), artist J.B. Irving, Jr., Thomas Ashby, and William W. Harllee. Included are two letters (1819) from Anthony Bonneau Shackelford to his sweetheart Jane H. Lee. Business correspondence (1865-1874) consists of letterpress copybooks containing letters concerning James M. Shackelford's dealings in corporate and municipal bonds for many South Carolina cities, the South Carolina Railroad Co., and other businesses. Correspondents include [J.] Eli Gregg of Mars Bluff, S.C., Thomas C. Jenkins, Charles T. Lowndes, Pelzer, Rogers, & Co., Enoch Pratt of Boston, Mass., General Daniel Tyler of New York, N.Y., George F. Tyler of Philadelphia, Pa., W.B. Williams, J. Legare Yates, and many others. Financial records include brokerage accounts, an account sales book, daybooks, expense accounts, personal accounts (1864) of James M. Shackelford, check stubs, and a trust estate account book (1850-1866). Other items include estate papers (1853) of Elizabeth A. Shackelford (d. 1853), insurance policies (1870's), and a copy of the will (1877) of James McBride Shackelford.
